Principal's Message - January
Dear Vista Grande Parents and Guardians,
On our first day back we welcomed our Area Superintendent, Dr. Lorden and Trustee, Mr. Beiser who came to visit our school. They were very impressed with the caliber of the teaching at our school and the level of engagement and participation of our students in all grades. We discussed the needs of the school and Trustee, Mr. Beiser promised to share with the Board our concerns on the topic of budget cuts.
Thank you to all our parents who sent out post cards asking our State Legislature to protect our schools!
Last month, we had an Open House for future students. If you missed this opportunity – please call our school and our office staff will set up a time for you to visit our school.
Choice Applications are due in by February 15th.
Happy New Year,
Cathy Calcagno
Principal
Off the Closure List!
The Board voted 5-0 to keep Vista Grande and several other schools off the closure list! However, the fight for education is NOT over. The State needs to provide more funding for education. Please contact your local and state representatives to request that schools and education need to be made a higher priority in the state of California.

Vista Grande School Closure
Dear Vista Grande Parents,
On Monday, October 17th, the Serra Cluster Council met with members from the school districts Realignment and Closure Committee.
Until this past Friday, we had been told that Vista Grande was not on the list for closure. Unfortunately that has changed and we were told that Vista Grande Elementary has been recommended by the committee for closure at the end of the school year.
We are all devastated by this news! It is NOT a "done deal." We have the opportunity to change the minds of the committee members and board to keep our school open...but we need your help! We need to come up with sound reasons, not just emotional ("we love our school") reasons that we can bring before the committee.
We would like to offer a few times for parents to come together and discuss ideas that we can bring before the committee to keep our school open. We will have a parent meeting on Thursday, October 20th at 12:15pm and again that evening at 5:00pm in lieu of our monthly Foundation meeting. The meeting will be held in the multi-purpose room.
There will be a public meeting in November for you, our Vista Grande Parents, to ask questions and voice concerns to a Realignment and Closure Committee member. Date and time to be determined.

Box Tops Competition
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome! This year Vista Grande Elementary School will be collecting Box Tops For Education coupons to raise money for our school. Did you know that some local schools raise thousands of dollars for their schools each year, just from clipping and submitting Box Tops?
Box Top coupons are on the packaging of hundreds of participating General Mills products that you probably use every day. All you need to do is cut them off of the box they are on, stick them in a baggie, and send them to school with your child. Or if you like, your local Albertsons has kindly set out a collection box at customer service. Your Albertsons is located at: 10633 Tierrasanta Blvd.
We will be collecting Box Tops all year long. Be sure to track our progress at www.boxtops4education.com. Thanks for choosing to support our school by collecting Box Tops!
